X Men: Blood Hunt- Jubilee 1#

Pretti Chhibber | Enid Bálam

Summary:

After the ending of Krakoa, both Heir of Apocalypse and the Blood Hunt tie-ins serve as a bridge between the two eras. In this one-shot, we find Jubilee battling a series of vampire attacks. Eventually, she finds a girl who recently got transformed, with the main emotional plot point being Jubilee teaching this girl that the transformation doesn’t mean she needs to succumb to her worst impulses and that she will help her understand that. The Forgiven also make a guest appearance, helping both in the fight and in helping her learn how to be a controlled vampire.

Writting: With this being a tie-in, it’s normal that the story doesn’t have a lot of meat on its bones. Even considering this, I would say Blood Hunt Jubilee could have been bolder by exploring her history as a vampire. Perhaps picking one of her blood-sucking foes or bringing in the X-Terminators as reinforcements. Even if it could have been a more ambitious book, I give it a lot of credit for managing to bring a strong emotional core to the issue, paralleling Jubilee’s and her newfound friend's experiences, and also for bringing in the Forgiven at the end. Marvel Comics experts might remember them from the series of one-shots from last year.

Art: Bálam manages to surprise with a set of strong action panels that feel both cartoony and dynamic. One small critique is that the backgrounds could have been more fleshed out to embrace some of that menacing setting, as they might come off as a bit bland. But overall, this mutant-centered tie-in is surely a good-looking issue.
