Heir of Apocalypse1#

Steve Foxe | Netho Diaz

Summary:

The issue starts with Apocalypse setting up his contest as a gigantic Egyptian structure arrives at Aswan. As we continue to the next scene, we find our first two contenders: Dani and Rictor. The book divides the 12 possible heirs into small groups to explore some fun interactions, as we find out some or even all of them choose to be part of this “game.” During this section, we get standout moments from almost every character, with my personal favorites being Exodus, Mr. Sinister, and Monet.

We have a smaller scene outside of the tournament, as Apocalypse asks both Sunfire and Archangel if they want to be part of the event. Both decline, but Archangel will certainly make an appearance in a future issue, leaving in a state of rage. As we arrive at the end of the issue, every member of the groups finds each other. Apocalypse delivers a message to them as an explosion occurs outside the structure. Every single member teams up as it is revealed that their new foe will be the son of Apocalypse: Genocide.

Writting: Steve Foxe has been consistently growing as one of the new hot creators at Marvel, and this book showcases every single one of his strengths. From managing a big cast (more than 15 characters) to delivering on each of their voices, his work is particularly impressive. The book also follows up on Krakoa in a way that feels respectful to the fans, as some of the fan favorites from this era (Exodus, Cypher, Monet, and even Synch) still seem to be full of future potential. Last but not least, Heir of Apocalypse is a tournament arc, bringing a level of campiness that is welcomed, especially after the emotional (and controversial) ending of Krakoa.

Art: Netho Diaz is a star in the making at Marvel. His style mixes the action-heavy lines reminiscent of the 90s with a modern comic landscape flair. This isn't the first time he has worked with the X-Office (Legion of X), and it's clear he has a deep love for the characters. It's truly remarkable how this generation of X artists shows their passion for the franchise, with the likes of Diaz, Vecchio, and Sevy wearing their intimate knowledge of X-Men on their sleeves. Below, we have a gallery with some of my favorite panels from the issue.
